Back in March, we were all surprised to learn that the J.J. Abrams-produced, Dan Trachtenberg-directed thriller Valencia was, in fact, a Cloverfield sequel, entitled 10 Cloverfield Lane. Well, it appears Abrams has been up to his old rug-pulling tricks again. We are now surprised to learn that the upcoming J.J. Abrams-produced, Julis Onah-directed sci-fi God Particle will be, in fact, another Cloverfield sequel.
The Wrap is reporting that the mysterious project – which has been assembling a stellar cast over the last few months, including Chris O’Dowd, David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki and Daniel Brühl – will actually be the third movie in Cloverfield series, and the first set in space. Abrams is planning a wider shared universe, with hopes for a new film each year.
Details on the film are sketchy, as they usually are with anything Abrams has his name attached to, but we do know that it will be set on the International Space Station, detailing a group of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that “changes everything”.
The original Cloverfield, directed by Matt Reeves, arrived in 2008, buoyed by a breadcrumb trail of clever marketing and an enigmatic monster foe. 10 Cloverfield Lane only added to that carefully calibrated mystique.
God Particle – if it is even still called that – is due to arrive in February 2017. A trailer is expected to drop next month.
