Just when you thought Denis Villeneuve had absolutely, positively filled every main cast position he could on the Blade Runner sequel, along comes someone new. Despite the cameras having been rolling for a while, Jared Leto has leapt aboard the still-untitled sci-fi follow-up.

The sequel, scripted by Michael Green and the original movie's co-writer Hampton Fancher, is set decades after the original, at a time when Earth's environment is in an even worse condition than it was. Beyond that, we still don't know much about the story, though Harrison Ford is back as Rick Deckard.

And that information lockout means there is no information on what Leto might be doing in the movie, but he joins an eclectic cast including Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Lennie James and Dave Bautista.

With Ridley Scott aboard as executive producer, the new Blade Runner instalment will be out on October 6 next year.

Leto is on our screens now as The Joker in Suicide Squad. We can only hope he'll feel better about the outcome of this next job...
