After his voice popped up in The Force Awakens for all of 0.32 seconds, many have wondered how Ewan McGregor could re-enter the post-George Lucas Star Wars realm. The actor, too, seems curious as to how that might work.
While doing the rounds for his directorial debut American Pastoral, McGregor got chatting about the franchise. “I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one,” the actor said.
In the prequels, Obi-Wan was last seen handing baby Luke over to his Tatooine-based step-parents. In the originals? Well, we all know how that ended for him… “It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them (laughs).” The character certainly has the time to play with. Personally we like the idea of Ben and Boga creating havoc in Stewjon.
McGregor clearly loves the franchise, hoping that the future films will “explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and 2!” Could McGregor also be considered to direct a Ben standalone? We’ll have to wait and see.
