Given that the new Mary Poppins film sees Rob Marshall reunited with the producers behind Into The Woods, it was somewhat inevitable that they'd pluck someone from that cast for their latest project. Don't go worrying that it's Johnny Depp, though: Emily Blunt is their choice to play the famous magic nanny.

Marshall and the rest have a script by David Magee that draws from other books in Poppins author P.L. Travers' range, which expand beyond the original tome across a series that ran between 1934 and 1988. It's been reported that this new film will catch up with the Banks family 20 years after the original, and finds Mary coming to help during the Depression era. While original co-songwriter Richard Sherman has given his blessing to the new film, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be the one providing the necessary tunes.

Blunt's the front-runner right now, and is in talks to star, but has still got to figure out whether she can actually fit it into her schedule, with the added wrinkle that she's expecting her second child with husband John Krasinski, so that could be a factor. As for other work, she'll next be seen in The Huntsman: Winter's War, which is out on April 8.
