Every film about five kids who have to defend their planet against a huge alien threat needs a nemesis that can deliver the cackling goods. The team from the latest Power Rangers film has Elizabeth Banks playing Rita Repulsa and you can see the first image of her in character below.
Rita famously causes trouble for the Rangers with a multitude of evil schemes in the TV series, and now Banks is playing a slightly altered version for the new movie. If your movie tropes bingo card had her using the word "edgy" to describe her take, prepare to cross it off... “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” she tells People (as reported by Entertainment Weekly). “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” All of their mothers are named Martha? What a coincidence!
Elsewhere, it sounds largely like business as usual, with Naomi Scott, Becky Gomez, RJ Cyler, Dacre Montgomery and Ludi Lin playing the five main heroes fighting to save Angel Grove and the Earth from destruction. Dean Israelite is in the director's chair and the new Power Rangers will be out on March 24 next year.
