Clearly happy with what the studio was seeing in post-production, Sony began developing a sequel to 2014's Denzel Washington-starring cinematic update of The Equalizer before the original came out. Now we know that Antoine Fuqua should be back to direct and that it'll kick off shooting next year.
Talking with Collider at a screening of The Magnificent Seven (which he also worked on) Equalizer producer Todd Black confirmed Washington's return and said that they had a plan in place to make the sequel in 2017. "The script is done. We start shooting right after Labor Day, maybe right before Labor Day depending on Denzel’s schedule," he says. "So Equalizer 2 will start shooting in September of next year, maybe earlier depending on another movie that we’re shooting with Denzel before that. We’re going to do a little bit more work and we’re going to go into casting right after that for his nemesis."
Richard Wenk once more wrote the script, which remains shrouded in mystery for now. But you can assume Washington's Robert McCall will be laying the smack down on someone criminal... That "other movie", incidentally, could well be Nightcrawler writer/director Tony Gilroy's next, Inner City, which Washington has shown real interest in.
