With the blockbuster flags of summer all but packed away, the awards season bunting has begun to be strung and one of the big bodies that hand out awards has made its latest list public. The National Board of Review has given gongs to the likes of Manchester By The Sea, Moonlight and Kubo And The Two Strings.
It was an especially good day for Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester, which won Best Film, Best Actor for Casey Affleck, Best Breakthrough Performance (Male) for Lucas Hedges and Best Original Screenplay for Lonergan himself.
But there was love to go around, as Barry Jenkins won Best Director for Moonlight and Martin Scorsese shared the Best Adapted Screenplay trophy with co-writer Jay Cocks for their latest, Silence. The NBR is not traditionally the most reliable indicator for Oscars, as many of their picks have not translated into big awards runs, but they often celebrate great performances or movies that others might overlook.
