With his filming work on Doctor Strange now compete (see more on that one here), Benedict Cumberbatch is swapping the mystical arts for mind palaces as production on the fourth series of Sherlock is now kicking off. Talking up the new adventures, Steven Moffat is dropping sly hits that we could be nearing the end of the adventures of Holmes and Martin Freeman's Watson.

Sherlock series four – here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street, and it always feels like coming home," says Moffat, who co-created the series with Mark Gatiss. "Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson and terror and tragedy are looming. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.” Now, he could just be being typically cryptic and Moffaty, but it does sound like we could be in for a farewell to the Baker Street irregulars. Especially since the leading duo's increasingly busy film schedules are making it harder to find open slots in their diaries.

Still, we can at least expect the new series, which has yet to announce a date. The new batch of three episodes will feature the return of fellow stars Louise Brealey, Una Stubbs, Amanda Abbington and Rupert Graves with the first of the new batch directed by Rachel Talalay. As for the plot? All we have so far is the basic synopsis: "Season 4 begins with the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil as Doctor Watson and his wife Mary (Abbington) prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.” The game of how much psychological damage can Holmes inflict on one infant is afoot!
