With his version of The Magnificent Seven due in cinemas next month, director Antoine Fuqua has his eye on another story that has been through a couple of cinematic evolutions already. He's in talks to handle the latest take on Scarface for Universal.
Scarface is one of those concepts that keeps coming around – Howard Hawks made one in 1932, then there is the famous Brian De Palma film of 1983, this time with Al Pacino as a determined and ruthless Cuban immigrant.
The new movie sticks with the immigrant tale, but switches the setting to present day Los Angeles, where a new Mexican arrival will go to any lengths to grasp his chance at the American Dream. David Ayer and Paul Attanasio have both taken swipes at the script, with Jonathan Herman the most recent writer to work on it. Chile's Pablo Larrain had been attached to call the shots, but now it appears it's Fuqua's gig if he wants it. The Magnificent Seven, meanwhile, arrives on September 23.
