Indie sci-fi thriller IO has picked up the services of a solid cast and a distribution deal with Netflix to boot. Anthony Mackie, Margaret Qualley and Danny Huston have all joined the dystopian movie.
IO, which has Jonathan Helpert directing a script developed at the Sundance Institute Writer's Lab by Clay Jeter, Charles Spano and Will Basanta, is set on an Earth that has been all but abandoned after catastrophic climate change has wrought havoc across the world. Qualley will be Sam Walden, one of the last surviving people on the planet, who is racing to find a cure for her stricken home world before the last shuttle leaving for a distant human colony takes off and she's stranded.
Mackie is aboard to play Micah, a mysterious refugee headed for the shuttle who leads Sam to question whether she can truly help the poisoned planet. Variety's report offered no details on Huston's role.
The cameras are rolling now in France.
Qualley, most recently seen in The Nice Guys, is part of the cast of manga adaptation Death Note. Mackie has worked on Kathryn Bigelow's untitled Detroit riots drama and crime thriller Wetlands. Huston will be seen in Wonder Woman, which is out on 2 June next year.
