If you saw the title for the Lonely Island team's latest comedy, music industry tale Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and found yourself wondering what the movie might be like, the red band trailer suggests silly. Very silly.
Andy Samberg is the focus here, playing Connor4Real, a hyped up, pumped up, and ambitious boy band frontman who has risen to megastardom on the back of his appeal to huge crowds of fans who he calls "Confidantes". But when he decides to go it alone, he discovers that solo stardom is not quite as easy... Oh, and his nemesis is Martin Sheen, which is a touch we love. Woe betide the man who crosses President Bartlet!
With regular collaborators Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone sharing writing duties (and Akiva and Jorma directing and appearing in the film alongside Samberg), Popstar looks to be a full-on lampooning of an industry that has already taken several lumps over the years, but is this time in the crosshairs of people who know a thing or two about making music funny.
The trailer takes the form of a behind-the-music-style look at the main man, with contributions from real-life types including Simon Cowell (he's only a cameo, don't panic), and is full of typical sweary Lonely Island style.
Popstar hits the US on June 3 and on August 26 in the UK.
