Aside from the her digital incarnation, the most recognisable image of Tomb Raider's adventurous main character Lara Croft has been Angelina Jolie. Now there's a new Croft in town, as Alicia Vikander has taken over the role for the rebooted version.
For this version of the game adaptation and its central figure, there's a fresh take on the story, with Lara off on her earliest adventure. Seven years after her father disappears, 21-year-old Lara is refusing to inherit his business empire, choosing instead to attend college while tiding herself over working as a bike courier. Eventually, she's inspired to investigate what happened to him, and kicks off her search at his last-known location, a tomb on an island off the coast of Japan.
"When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited – Lara Croft is a truly iconic character," Vikander tells the magazine. "I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits – tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It's a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill." Roar Uthaug directed the movie, and Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Alexandre Willaume are in the cast. Tomb Raider will be out on 16 March next year.
