The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has been set up and shut down so many times, Terry Gilliam may be a floating head in a jar with a robot body by the time he actually shoots it. But like the driven hero of the story, he won't stop trying and now comes word that Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Adam Driver is now considering starring.
If he does lock in the role, he'd take over the main part of the young man who meets a version of Quixote from Jack O'Connell who had been considering it. And the last person attached to the role of Don Quixote himself, John Hurt has apparently also dropped out, with Gilliam turning to former Monty Python pal Michael Palin to take over.
According to Screen International, the current iteration of the film would find Driver as Toby, an arrogant, mean publicist who was once an idealistic young film student. When he unexpectedly comes across a copy of his student film about Quixote, he visits the village where it was set and is horrified to see the impact his work has wrought. And that's before he meets the man who now believes he is Don Quixote himself...
Gilliam has tried several times to restart the production since his epic (and epically ill-fated) version collapsed in 1998. Cross your fingers, toes, eyes and streams that he finally manages to get it made, with the rights available yet again at the Cannes Film Market this year.
In addition to that, Deadline reports that Driver is also signing up for Steven Soderbergh's return to cinema with heist film Logan Lucky. Though yesterday's reports had Michael Shannon co-starring with Channing Tatum, there is now word that Shannon has had to drop out (a schedule clash with his role in Guillermo del Toro's latest) and Driver will replace him. Plus there is news that Seth MacFarlane is also in talks to sign on. Stranger things, we suppose.
Driver has been working on Star Wars: Episode VIII, returning to the role of conflicted villain Kylo Ren. The film will arrive on December 15, 2017.
