The history of movies adapted from Square-Enix' best-selling Final Fantasy games is not exactly garlanded with glory. The most famous, 2001's Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was hailed for some of its CG, but criticised for a story that couldn't match it. Now the company is hoping for more with a movie tied into the 15th game called Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV and has recruited Aaron Paul, Lena Headey and Sean Bean to lead its voice cast. Check out the trailer below.

The plot runs thusly: we're plunged into the magical kingdom of Lucis, which is home to the hallowed Crystal. Unfortunately for its inhabitants, the menacing empire of Niflheim will stop at nothing to make it theirs, and thus war has raged between the two for as long as most can remember.

On the side of the light, we have Lucis' King Regis (Bean), who commands an elite force of soldiers dubbed the Kingsglaive. Wielding their king’s magic, Nyx Ulric (Paul) and his fellow glaives stand before the crown city of Insomnia, fighting to stay the inexorable advance of Niflheim’s imperial army. But things don't go too well for the kingdom... Which, let's be honest, should not be a surprise to anyone who watched Game Of Thrones' first season.

It's all been part of a huge push for the new game, which includes an anime prequel and various game trailers. The film will be released through streaming channels and Blu-ray later this year, most likely around the time of the game's arrival on September 30 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
