These two superb movies - shot back-to-back; how's that for counting your chickens before their opening weekend? - set the standard by which all other four-colour book adaptations must be judged.

Admirably playing the whole thing straight as a slice of pure Americana, Superman features new footage integrated specially for DVD. It hits the characters, feel and look of the comic spot on, especially Reeve in the title role. Unusually, and pleasingly, the action-packed sequel is equal to the original.
