In mid-2013, word first broke of a potentially exciting combination: Takashi Miike making his English-language debut on a film that was to star Tom Hardy. It hasn't quite worked out that way for The Outsider, but it does now have Jared Leto attached to the lead instead.
In the three years since it was announced, the drama has undergone a few changes behind the camera too: now Danish director Martin Zandvliet is in charge to call the shots instead, working from Andrew Baldwin's script.
The story, at least, remains unchanged: set in post-World War II Japan, The Outsider chronicles what happens when an imprisoned American soldier (Leto) is freed with the help of his cellmate, who is part of the Yakuza. Seeking to repay the debt, he finds himself sinking ever deeper into the murky, dangerous criminal underworld. If all goes to plan (and the participants are keeping their fingers crossed, given what happened to the last iteration), the cameras should be rolling in the autumn.
Leto will next be on our screens as The Joker in Suicide Squad, which arrives to cause mayhem on August 5.
