Update: A variant version of the new trailer has hit the web, revealing a couple of extra plot details – so Spoiler Alert on that front – and some fleeting new snippets of footage. Check it out at the bottom of the page.
While the Star Wars Celebration Europe event delivered a behind-the-scenes reel for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we've all had to be patient and wait for the siren that indicates the new trailer is here. It's finally blaring and you can check out the new footage.
Rogue One is, of course, the story of how a rag-tag group of rebel fighters from all walks of life banded together to help steal and smuggle the plans for the first Death Star. Our hero this time is Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso, a conflicted fighter who is a rebel in more ways than one. She leads up a cast that also includes Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jonathan Aris and Eunice Olumide.
In the movie itself, we can expect a few sightings of characters (such as a certain wheezing Sith Lord) to more closely tie this one into the main Star Wars universe, but Rogue One represents a new test for the franchise, a stand-alone, live-action adventure without leaning on Jedis, Skywalkers or some of the other hallmarks of the movies made to date.
We'll find out how it does on December 16, but this trailer certainly keeps up the excitement and introduces more of the other characters – we get to hear Tudyk's former Imperial droid K-2SO speak, for one thing (with a vague nod to C-3PO, even if this droid is a very different personality).
