Taking a bold step forward after his atmospheric debut Another Earth, Mike Cahill continues to fuse science and wonder, this time in an ingenious thriller dealing with the possibility of human reincarnation. Cast luminously against type, Michael Pitt plays New York biologist Ian Gray, whose present-day research into the origins of the human eye is halted by memories of a tragic love story from his past. As with Another Earth, some suspension of disbelief is required, but Cahill sustains his conceit to the end, giving satisfying closure to a potentially unsolvable puzzle, while maintaining just the right amount of ambiguity.
