Just last month, word arrived that Legendary Pictures was in talks with Warner Bros. to move Kong: Skull Island to its former production partner from Universal in order to set up a possible smack-down (or team-up) between Kong and fellow fearsome beast Godzilla. The studio has announced that it’s all now official{
The current plan is for Kong: Skull Island (which Jordan Vogt-Roberts is about to start shooting) to arrive as planned on March 10, 2017, followed by the Godzilla sequel in June 2018 and Godzilla Vs. Kong in 2020. See, superheroes? You’re not the only ones who can plan a film schedule out beyond the next couple of years.
"All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases,” says the studio in its blurb, as brought online by The Hollywood Reporter. Yep, looks like Warners and Legendary are trying to breed another shared universe.
And using the word “heroes” makes us think that we could be in for another movie along the lines of Batman V Superman, where the giant ape and the (currently) much more giant lizard are initially at odds before becoming besties and forming a super team to battle other dangerous mutant monstoids. Even more excitingly, this could lead to Godzooky’s introduction into the film can… No, can’t even finish that thought, so purely horrified it makes us.
So there you have it: a new Kong/Godzilla franchise is growing in a cine-test tube. Gamera, meanwhile, decides to re-activate his gym membership in case he’s called upon to take part in all this brawling. Fell the burn, buddy.
