Nick Cave is turning up in Movie News a lot lately. There was the story that he's providing music for Guillermo Del Toro's **Pinocchio; the one about The Threepenny Opera; the one about The Death of Bunny Munro... Here's an odd one though: according to the wrap, Cave is on re-write duties for Stephen Norrington's remake of **The Crow.
Last we heard, Norrington's own screenplay was "terrific", but producer Ed Pressman obviously felt there was room for improvement somewhere. That, or the opportunity to inject the film with some genuine alt-rock cred was too good to pass up. Consider that there seem to be modern-day Western elements to the new Crow, and then take a look at The Proposition, and it becomes clear that this might be a very good idea.
And it goes to show that Cave, named one of Variety's ten most promising screenwriters in 2006 for The Proposition, is increasingly in demand outside of his music. Clearly he's not above work for hire either. This was ever so. He claims to have knocked off his contribution to the Batman Forever soundtrack in twenty minutes: "they asked me to write what Batman means to me, which is basically nothing".
Norrington's The Crow, we're promised, will be very visually different to Alex Proyas' tragic original, and much closer to James O'Barr's original comics. Shooting is expected to start later this year, and the actor who's landed the central role of Eric Draven (played by Brandon Lee last time) should be announced in the next few weeks. Caw!
