Pablo Larraín’s profile has been building steadily in recent years, reaching a peak with last year’s Oscar-nominated Presidential psychological drama Jackie. Almost in quick succession, the Chilean filmmaker returns to the politics of his homeland with Neruda, arriving in April. We have an exclusive new clip for you – take a look below.
Set in 1948, as the Cold War spreads to Chile, the film focuses on the real life Chilean figure Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco), a poet, diplomat and politician. He accuses the government of betraying the Communist Party, resulting in his swift impeachment by President González Videla (Alfredo Castro). Ultimately, police Prefect Oscar Peluchonneau (Gael García Bernal) is assigned to arrest the poet.
The clip we see shows Neruda on the run, howling into the snowy Chilean wilderness, as Peluchonneau continues in hot pursuit. As with Jackie, expect real-life history to be thrown into an impressionistic, visually stunning package.
With award nominations aplenty and rave notices from various film festival appearances, Neruda promises to be one to watch out for. It arrives in the UK on 7 April.
