The new issue of Empire is in all good and not-so-good newsagents now, and within its pages there are a whole host of movie exclusives – among them, a sneak peek of The Mummy, the first in Universal’s planned Dark Universe series of films. We’ve studied the ancient papyrus of the issue in order to bring you a small preview – see below, and click to embiggen.
The image shows the film’s ostensible villain, Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella): unwrapped after being entombed for millennia to wreak havoc in the 21st century. If we’re to care about her, she can’t simply have a one-dimensional world domination complex. “The thing I’ve been focused on more than anything is that she has a really good reason to be where she’s at,” explains the film’s director, Alex Kurtzman. “If we can relate to her, and experience that weird, confusing Universal feeling you get of loving and caring about the monster, then hopefully I will have succeeded.”
