Can providing a voice for an animated movie about a rock star dog lead to other job opportunities? Apparently it can, as J.K. Simmons is proving with a new indie leading role called **The Bachelors{ =nofollow}.

The connection between the cartoon and the new film is writer Kurt Voelker, who was one of the people toiling on the animated script and is now busy setting up his directorial debut. Simmons will be playing a recently widowed man who decides that he needs to bond with his estranged teenage son. Moving to a new city, they both strike up romances, but when those relationships are tested, it’s the father-son bond that helps them both. You may not be surprised to learn that this one is described as a “dramedy”.

Voelker wants to have the cameras rolling in Los Angeles early next year. Simmons is as ever in demand, with a variety of movies headed our way. Rock Dog doesn’t have a UK date yet, but his tonsil talents will be heard in Kung Fu Panda 3, out on March 11 (more on that one here) and Zootropolis (March 25), plus La La Land and The Accountant, with the latter figuring in a November 4, 2016 release.
