It made its debut in Cannes and now Joachim Trier’s Louder Than Bombs is heading our way with a very presentable cast in tow. Jesse Eisenberg, David Strathairn, Gabriel Byrne and the great Isabelle Huppert all feature in the film’s new trailer, right here for you to view.
Set three years after her death, Huppert's war photographer, it turns out, had been the glue that had kept her family from spiralling into chaos and dysfunction. It's then that the family’s oldest son, academic Jonah (Eisenberg), returns home to be with his dad (Byrne) and younger brother, Conrad (Devin Druid). The picture is muddied by the fact that Jonah has just had a baby son, his father is struggling with his feelings and his brother is distant and strange. In the words of Hail, Caesar!’s Hobie Doyle, it’s complicated.
It's also a coming-of-age piece for the younger sibling played by Olive Kitteridge's Druid. Early word from the Croisette was of an eye-catching performance from a young actor we'll be seeing much more from.
As Trier points out, Louder Than Bombs is about "neither war nor The Smiths”. The title is borrowed from words coined by American poet Elizabeth Smart in her book By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept. "I loved that those words had a specifically American provenance as I worked on this film set in the US,” says Trier. Sorry Smiths fan.
Louder Than Bombs gets its UK theatrical release on April 22, via Soda Pictures.
