Jason Momoa Says His Aquaman Won't Be The Butt Of Jokes

Aquaman has in the past, to put it charitably, been the target of one or two jokes when it comes to his standing in the Justice League and his close relationship with creatures dwelling under the sea. But according to Jason Momoa, the man who will shoulder the character’s mantle in the DC cinematic universe starting with Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, he won’t be a figure of fun too much longer.

Talking about the role and his hopes for it at the Fan Expo event in Canada this weekend, Momoa admitted the character’s history as something of a punching bag for fandom, but seemed confident he’ll change that. “It’s cute and funny. People make fun of him,” he said. “There’s a bunch of jokes about him, but I’m like, ‘Just wait. Let’s just wait a little bit, and then you can make jokes.’” You can check out more from Momoa in the video above.

From the looks of him – and admittedly, all we’ve seen is the first image director Zack Snyder tweeted earlier this year, this will certainly be a less Day-Glo interpretation of the character. In case you need a briefing, he’s the King of Atlantis, blessed with impressive superpowers thanks to his Atlantean DNA. These include super-strength, telepathy which allows him to speak any language, and the ability to control and command all marine life.

As mentioned, he’ll make a brief debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which arrives here on March 25 next year. He’ll then be part of the first** Justice League **film in 2017 before following that with the Aquaman standalone movie, directed by James Wan, in 2018.
