The nominations for 2017's Golden Globes awards have been revealed, and the romantic old-school musical La La Land has come out on top, with seven nominations to its name. Two years afer Damien Chazelle dominated the awards season with Whiplash, the 31-year-old director looks set to do it again, having already won rave reviews and several awards from critics circles.

Coming-of-age drama Moonlight was not far behind with seven nods, while Manchester By The Sea earned five. Elsewhere, Deadpool picked up two suprise nominations, for Best Musical/Comedy and Best Actor – some rare awards recognition for a superhero movie. In the animated category, Pixar, so often the team to beat in that field, were denied a nomination, as Finding Dory was pipped by the likes of Sing, Kubo And The Two Strings, and Moana.

Finally, perennial awards-sweeper Meryl Streep will add another trophy to her already creaking shelf, as she will pick up the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. (True to form, Streep also picked up a nomination in the regular awards competiton, in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins.)

Awarded annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a group of expat journalists based in Los Angeles, the Golden Globes are slightly unusual in that they award both film and television, and separate some categories into 'drama' and 'musical/comedy'. Jimmy Fallon will host the 74th annual ceremony on 8 January, in what's seen as a key barometer of the Oscars.
