Marvel and Netflix were out in force with their small screen offerings, and one of the main treats on offer was the new teaser for Luke Cage, featuring Mike Colter as the seemingly indestructible hero. Watch him kicking in a few doors (and bashing a few heads) below.
For those unaware or new to the character (who first appeared in Jessica Jones), the series will be delving into Luke's superhero origin story, showing how he got his strength and durability thanks to a sabotaged experiment in prison. He ends up a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in Harlem, but is pulled out of the shadows to battle a new threat to his city, while also confronting the demons of his past.
At the panel for the show, executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker brought out some clips (including the teaser, which shows Luke looking to beat Daredevil at his own hallway fight scene game, memorably set to Ol' Dirty Bastard's Shimmy Shimmy Ya), which showed off both the hero and some of his foes.
And the gangster rap feeling of the teaser is definitely in the series itself, according to Coker. “That’s what I call the Wu Tang-ification of the Marvel universe,” he said. “It’s got attitude, it’s got flavor, it’s got grit, but it’s elegant at the same time… Every single episode is named after a Gang Starr song.”
In addition to new looks at Luke and the first teaser for one of the other Defenders characters (you can see the Iron Fist footage here), there was news that Daredevil has been renewed for Season 3 (not a real shock) and then a brief teaser for The Defenders as a whole, which is sitting at the bottom of the page.
All of Luke Cage's first season will be on Netflix from September 30.
