Nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globes have arrived, and, in keeping with this awards season, they're a refreshingly curious mixture of names. Along with the Screen Actors Guild nominees, the Golden Globe noms usually mark the point where the frontrunners emerge, marking their territory before December’s late flurry of releases. This year's crop from SAG had a slightly different idea, finding room for a few contenders outside of the immediate Oscar conversation (hello Sarah Silverman and surprise omissions for Joy and The Martian).
Today’s Golden Globes announcement, from the mysterious 93-member Hollywood Foreign Press Association, seems to have steered the Oscar ship back onto a more conventional course – but that’s not to say there wasn’t the odd surprise or two. Bryan Cranston found himself nominated for Trumbo (a drama, not a comedy, people), Rooney Mara continued her Best Actress campaign for Carol and Alicia Vikander was recognised for her work in both The Danish Girl and Ex Machina - a great week for Alex Garland's film after reigning triumphant at Sunday night's BIFAs. Lily Tomlin, in her 76th year, also picked up two nominations, for Grandma and Grace & Frankie.
There was a lot of love in the room for our film of the year, Mad Max: Fury Road, but nothing for hotly-tipped Johnny Depp in Black Mass, nor anything for the ensemble cast of Spotlight (though Mark Ruffalo did grab a nom for Infinitely Polar Bear). Elsewhere, our hearts were gladdened to see the humble stop-motion of Shaun The Sheep Movie rub shoulders with a Pixar double-bill of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in the animation category.
