The Halloween franchise, first birthed by John Carpenter back in 1978, has been through the typical stages of horror series: a batch of sequels of varying quality, a reboot and now the chance for the man who started it all to have a hand once again, as Carpenter has signed on to produce a new Michael Myers film for Miramax and Blumhouse Productions.
There have been 10 Halloween films so far, but Carpenter has rarely been more than a contractual credit on remakes and sequels to movies he helped spearhead. And while not everything he's ever made is horror gold, he's proven to be a sure had where Myers and co. are concerned. And he also seems enthused: “38 years after the original Halloween, I’m going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all.”
Plus, the Blumhouse team has proven they know how to make effective horror on a budget, which was how the original film was produced. “Halloween is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies," says Jason Blum. "The great Malek Akkad and John Carpenter have a special place in the hearts of all genre fans and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give Halloween fans the movie they deserve.”
Akkad will also be a producer on the new movie, which is now firmly on the fast track and hunting like a silent stalker for filmmakers to tackle the challenge. What shape the latest film will take remains to be seen, but we're interested to see what input Carpenter has this time around.
