Easy-going Chet (Candy) takes his family Away From It All (from, no, not Poland but gaspan affluent Illinois suburb) to a cabin in the Canadian woods, but the simple vacation goes awry when appalling in-laws Roman (Aykroyd) and clan intrude themselves.
Naturally they are preyed upon by wildlife and experience the usual nature mishaps, but the spots of slapstick are mixed up with domestic sitcom, the teenage son's fumbling romantic progress and familial sentiment to fuddling and tedious effect.
