Update: An alternative version has also hit the web. Check it out at the bottom of the page.

Hear that? It’s the sound of blissful calm before the next lot of Ghostbusters vitriol crashes online like a Sumerian demigod through 1980s Manhattan. The movie’s new trailer has just landed, so it may be fleeting. Take a closer look below.

The first Ghostbusters trailer, apparently the least popular in YouTube history, was a bruising experience for all concerned. This one brings fresh spectral action, characters beats, gags and plenty more of current Empire cover star Slimer. At one point, Chris Hemsworth also gets possessed by something nasty and a giant logo destroys part of New York. Seriously, what’s not to like?

Story-wise, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig play particle physicists who have “dedicated their lives to the paranormal”; Kate McKinnon – rarely sighted in this trailer – is the fire-haired engineering genius; and Leslie Jones is the street smart addition who knows Manhattan inside out – and provides the team with its new Ecto-1. Somewhere out there, something more powerful than Stay Puft and probably uglier than Vigo the Carpathian is stirring...

… something called, well, Rowan. “Rowan is the ultimate loner,” director Paul Feig told Empire of his hitherto unglimpsed villain. “[He’s] a regular New Yorker whose goal is to bring some things back to this world." The character is played by another Saturday Night Live veteran, Neil Casey. "He wants to trap ghosts, but for a different purpose…” adds Feig, perhaps hinting at the cause of this phantasm extravaganza.

Ghostbusters arrives in cinemas on July 15. Head here for the first trailer.
