Fast & Furious 8 has been talked about as the first instalment of a potential final F&F trilogy for some time now, and here's the official confirmation. Studio Universal have staked out the release dates for episodes 9 and 10. They'll arrive on April 19, 2019 and April 2, 2021. Vin Diesel posted a celebratory Instagram, which reads thusly, in the recognisable Furious font.

Release dates for Fast & Furious 9 and 10

Fast 9 and Furious 10 (titles not confirmed yet; we're just riffing here) are the first films to land in their respective slots. 10, furthermore, is the first film to grab a confirmed release date in 2021. Even Star Wars and Marvel haven't quite done that yet.

Story-wise, nothing's been revealed; we don't even know terribly much about F&F8 yet. And after 10? All indications so far are that it'll wrap up the main series with, no doubt, some extensive varoom and kersmash. But there's always that extended spin-off Fast & Furious movie universe to keep things ticking over in perpetuity.

Fast & Furious 8, coming off the astonishing $1.5bn success of Furious 7, will, of course, star Vin Diesel, with Dwayne Johnson also confirmed as returning, and the rest of the surviving regulars and Kurt Russell looking like strong possibilities. Straight Outta Compton's F. Gary Gray is the director this time (having previously worked with Diesel on A Man Apart), and we'll see what he's come up with on April 14 next year.
