Live-Action Judge Dredd TV Series In The Works

2012's Dredd may not have hit the box office heights that its filmmakers hoped for, but it certainly spurred a lot of calls for a sequel. Aside from the unofficial animated follow-up, there's been no movement on the cinematic front, but the world's grumpiest law keeper is now taking aim at our TV screens as live-action series Judge Dredd: Mega City One is now in the works according to Entertainment Weekly.

While it isn't a direct continuation of the movie, it will channel the same feel, planned as an ensemble drama about Dredd and other judges policing the tough streets of the sprawling city first envisioned by creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for 2000AD. There are some elements of the Dredd movie team here, though, as Rebellion bosses and producers Jason and Chris Kingsley, along with IM Global's Stuart Ford are backing this new small screen outing.

"This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age," IM Global Television boss Mark Stern tells EW. "Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television."
