Break out the party platter of chimichangas! And smash the fourth wall! With box office predictions already healthy for its launch this weekend, it appears Fox is ready to stay in business with Deadpool, as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the sequel is now in active development.
Given the tortured tale of getting Wade Wilson to the screen, this will come as a relief to star/producer Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have already been working on the script for a follow-up.
Tim Miller, the VFX supervisor-turned-director who spun a short proof of concept clip into the job of making the first film, isn't officially back for more, but 20th Century Fox is apparently looking to keep the team together.
The Merc with a Mouth has scored a lot of buzz recently, but the R-rated nature of the content meant the budget had to be kept thrifty. Hopefully if the movie lives up to its box office predictions, the sequel will enjoy more cash and a bigger scope. Could we see other characters crossover into Deadpool's world? Fox certainly wants to encourage a cinematic universe along the lines of Marvel's and that might start to happen with more films. The like of comic book characters Garrison Kane and Cable were certainly considered, so perhaps they will now show up.
Deadpool is out on in cinemas... today, and you can see what we thought of it here. We'd expect a more formal announcement, and probably some filthy jokes, soon.
