Thanks to the deal that allowed Marvel to share some control over Spider-Man with Sony, we'll meet the web-slinger's latest cinematic incarnation (played by Tom Holland) in Captain America: Civil War, where he'll have some interaction with Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. Now the latter is returning the favour, signing a deal to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
With Jon Watts directing the new stand-alone (which will sidestep the usual origin story in favour of Peter Parker already swinging around New York as his alter ego), Homecoming will see our young hero dealing with school life dramas as well as super villains.
Confirmed to appear so far are Marisa Tomei as Aunt May (likewise introduced in Civil War), Tony Revolori, Laura Harrier and Zendaya. Michael Keaton had been in talks to play a villain, but according to Deadline, he's not going to be in the film now.
What Anthony Starkington III will be up to in the film remains a mystery. Nor, since the actor signs deals on a film-by-film basis for his Marvel paymasters, do we know if this is a one-shot deal or whether he might crop up in future Spidey outings for Sony. It also means that RDJ will be a busy man this year, between this and his mooted return to the world of Sherlock Holmes.
Captain America: Civil War (which we reviewed right here) is out next week in the UK and May 6 in the States. Spider-Man: Homecoming, due to start shooting in June, has a July 7, 2017 release date pencilled in.
