The film is still in cinemas, but the team behind Oscar hopeful Brooklyn has its eyes on a potential telly spin-off. Wildgaze Films is considering a series based around Julie Walters' character, Mrs. Keogh.
Wildgaze producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey are developing the idea, which will focus on the boarding house seen in the film run by Walters' no-nonsense owner. With the series now in early development at the BBC's drama department, the duo is hopeful that Walters will be convinced to star and that other actors from the film might show up. “We’re talking to writers now and have a couple in our sights,” Dwyer tells Screen International, adding that nothing will move forward until Brooklyn itself has left cinemas and been released on home entertainment formats.
One person you won't be seeing on the small screen (barring a random cameo)? Saoirse Ronan, who starred in the movie, but is likely a little busy with her film career to make a long commitment to a series. Brooklyn has now earned more than $30 million worldwide and is nominated for three Oscars and six BAFTAs. Is it too much to hope that the TV boarding house will reveal Mrs. Overall as the cleaning lady? They can amazing things with splitscreens these days.
