Release dates for the Avatar sequels (all four of them!) have come and they have gone. But if we've learned anything from cinema, it's not to count out James Cameron. And so we're ready to believe him when – via the movies' official Facebook page – he announces that the sequels will arrive in December 2020 onwards.
Yes, it feels like a while away, but you have to consider that the Avatar cast and crew are only just about to kick off concurrent production on the four films. Cameron has been overseeing development of the scripts, with a writing team including Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno cranking out the drafts and technological development on the performance capture techniques and other effects continuing apace.
Not much has been said about the films' story, beyond the fact that it'll explore more about the moon of Pandora and its environs and we'll catch up with Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and the rest. “I can tell you one thing about them,” Cameron told Empire a few years ago when we asked about the storylines. “They’re gonna be bitchin’. You will shit yourself with your mouth wide open.” Thanks JC.
Whatever they promise, the movies are now set for 18 December 2020, 17 December 2021, 20 December 2024 and 19 December 2025.
