While the latest Dan Brown adaptation Inferno was roaring into cinemas elsewhere in the world, it was action thriller The Accountant that nabbed the top spot at the US box office chart. The movie, which stars Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick, earned $24.7 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates.
Second place was Kevin Hart's latest concert comedy film What Now?, securing his status as one of the most popular comics working today. With $11.98 million after one weekend, it has already made back its initial budget. The newcomers meant The Girl On The Train had to vacate its place at the top and move down to a third place siding. The murder mystery thriller made $11.97 million, which means the final tally might see it take the edge over the Hart film.
Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children moved down to fourth on $8.9 million, while Deepwater Horizon sank to fifth with $6.3 million.
At sixth place was animated outing Storks, adding $5.6 million for a $59.1 million total so far. Seventh was, somewhat fittingly, The Magnificent Seven, which made $5.2 million. Family comedy Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life slipped to eighth and $4.2 million, while Sully dropped to ninth on $2.9 million. The Birth Of A Nation rounded out the top 10, earning $2.7 million. That meant that the latest attempt to launch a family-friendly action franchise, Max Steel debuted outside the top 10, its lacklustre 11th place and $2.1 million despite opening in more than 2,000 screens doesn't bode well for its future.
